Mechanics of indentation of plastically graded materials—II: Experiments on nanocrystalline alloys with grain size gradients
نویسندگان
چکیده
A systematic study of depth-sensing indentation was performed on nanocrystalline (nc) Ni–W alloys specially synthesized with controlled unidirectional gradients in plastic properties. A yield strength gradient and a roughly constant Young’s modulus were achieved in the nc alloys, using electrodeposition techniques. The force vs. displacement response from instrumented indentation experiments matched very well with that predicted from the analysis of Part I of this paper. The experiments also revealed that the pile-up of the graded alloy around the indenter is noticeably higher than that for the two homogeneous reference alloys that constitute the bounding conditions for the graded material. These trends are also consistent with the predictions of the indentation analysis. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mechanics of indentation of plastically graded materials—I: Analysis
The introduction of controlled gradients in plastic properties is known to influence the resistance to damage and cracking at contact surfaces in many tribological applications. In order to assess potentially beneficial effects of plastic property gradients in tribological applications, it is essential first to develop a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the effects of yield stren...
متن کاملIndentation of Plastically Graded Materials by In - Suk
The introduction of certain controlled gradients in plastic properties is known to promote resistance to the onset of damage at contact surfaces during some tribological applications. Gradients in composition, microstructure and plastic properties can also be deleterious to contact-damage resistance in some situations. In order to realize such potentially beneficial or deleterious effects of pl...
متن کاملSteady-state frictional sliding contact on surfaces of plastically graded materials
Tailored gradation in elastic–plastic properties is known to offer avenues for suppressing surface damage during normal indentation and sliding contact. In tribological applications, sliding contact analysis provides a more representative mechanism for fundamental understanding and design as it offers a tool to test materials under conditions of controlled abrasive wear. However, no such study ...
متن کاملIndentation Size Effect and Strain Rate Sensitivity of Nanocrystalline Mg-Al Alloys
Deformation Behaviour of microcrystalline (mc) and nanocrystalline (nc) Mg-5%Al alloys produced by hot extrusion of ball-milled powders were investigated using instrumented indentation tests. The hardness values of the mc and nc metals exhibited indentation size effect (ISE), with nc alloys showing weaker ISE. The highly localized dislocation activities resulted in a small activation volume, he...

This study investigated the grain size dependence of mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of microcrystalline (mc) and nanocrystalline (nc: grain size below 100 nm) Mg-5wt% Al alloys. The Hall-Petch relationship was investigated by both instrumented indentation tests and compression tests. The test results from the indentation tests and compression tests match well with each other. ...
